1 - everything hits at once
kind of a dirty little groove. the guy is either british or affected, i'm going with affected. we got a twangy guitar doing fills, and a vibraphone thingy and shit like that. not bad.
2 - believing is art
another kind of dirty little groove. a little more rockin' than the last. probably because the dirty garage guitar is featured more prominently, and the vibes are pushed to the back a bit more. the vibes on this one sound like old elton john, daniel maybe? diggin the choruses big time.
3 - me and the bean
the opening piano chord to that verve song. velvet morning? anyway this song is cool. really cool, bass driven except for these great piano/guitar driven interludes.
4 - Lines in the suit
it's weezer "the good life," well at least for 10 seconds. then it kicks into this 70s loved out raggae soul strut. surf rock guitar arpeggios now. reminds me of that denim track "there were osmonds" and i really liked that song, so i'm really liking this one. "how come i feel so washed up / at such a tender age now."
5 - the fitted shirt
more of a straight up laid back rocker. about umm, a fitted shirt. and how they uhh don't fit right. least memorable of disc so far, but not bad by any means.
6 - anything you want
nice transition at 40 seconds. and nice bringing back the little organy thing. i really like the instrumentation these guys use. they've got the normal rock setup, and then throw in all this other stuff but keep it in the background so it's not a gimmick.
7 - take a walk
woohoo "handjob," such an underused word. this song just ain't doing it. i don't care if they say handjob twice. blah.
8 - 1020 Am
acoustic guitar and ... harpsichord? flutish noises from strawberry fields. throwaway.
9 - take the fifth
down and dirty bassline and handclaps. about a slut. a pretty sparse song. just the bass, handclaps and some incidental stuff. this singer guy feels right at home spitting out these lines. his voice sounds very rock n' roll. that 60s 70s britrock type. slurs in the appropriate places, etc.
10 - the book is a movie
instrumental. this album has some sort of relation to the afghan whigs' 1965. that album was a firey new orleans night with dulli hitting up the filthy comeons like a pro. this album isn't as sexy, isn't as glitzy, but it's definitely the soundtrack to some late night out in some city. and this instrumental isn't groundbreaking in any way.
11 - chicago at night
hmm, maybe it's a night out in chicago. works for me. this album started out a hell of a lot stronger than it closed up. of the last 5 tracks, 3 of them were pretty much throwaways. this song isn't bad, neither was track 9, but they don't have any of what the first 6 had. ar
